| Description: | Location: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park This monthly program on second Sundays brings together the members of Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes Park to share in the park’s beautiful trails.Led by Nick Shema, this month’s 3.5-mile round-trip walk explores the summit area of the park. Hike through rain forest rich with native plant and bird life, watch volcanism in action at Steam Vents and Steaming Bluff, plus smell the volcanic gases and see the multi-colored mineral deposits at Sulphur Banks. Along the way, get great views of Mauna Loa, Pele’s home at Halemaumau Crater, and Kilauea Caldera, one of the most active volcanoes on earth.The hike starts and ends at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Be prepared for the 4,000’ elevation as well as for variable weather conditions, including sunny, windy, chilly, and/or rainy.Free for Friends members, and non-members are welcome to join the non-profit organization in order to attend. Park entrance fees apply. | |||
